As gas prices continue to rise to unprecedented levels, every available resource is being investigated to replace fossil fuels by august official bodies like the energy commission to the average Joe and Josephine in the street. Hydrogen fuel cells seem to be a possible alternative. Hydrogen for cars will not only provide the chance to explore new energy sources; it will also open up better potential for us to improve how we travel overall.
Research into hydrogen fuel is quickly proving it's potential as a leading resource to replace fossil fuels. It is a naturally occurring element that is found in many things including water to many products you will find in your garden. Its abundance in nature means it has a great potential and is seen as a valuable resource that can be tapped into to meet the growing demand for a cheap, clean and reliable source of energy.
Methods for producing hydrogen fuel for cars can vary, but they are all quite efficient and much cleaner than is fossil fuel production. For instance, a gasoline production refinery requires 300 billion gallons of water to produce that fuel, but if it produced the same amount of hydrogen, it would only need one million gallons of water.
A gallon of hydrogen for cars costs half the price of a gallon of gasoline and improves fuel economy by more than two thirds. Hydrogen fuel generates lower engine operating temperature and there is no emission of hazardous fumes by its use.
A big problem hindering the production of hydrogen-fueled vehicles is the lack of available hydrogen fuel. In the future, home hydrogen refueling stations may become a realistic possibility, but they are not currently affordable for most people.
If cars were to run exclusively on electricity generated on board from hydrogen fuel a new paradigm in vehicle design would emerge. The equipment needed to propel a car would be much more basic, and smaller doing away with many design limitations. Some of these limitations include having to design around a heat-producing engine, and bulky floorboard configurations that currently are required for driveline equipment.
Clean, cost effective and environmentally safe, hydrogen is the fuel of our future. As hydrogen production increases and becomes more available, fueling stations will open and we will reap the savings and environmental benefits of using hydrogen for cars. So, as the gas prices see little chance of going back to old lows, the advancement of hydrogen fuel technology will continue apace as more money is put into research and development by governments and corporations alike.
