Locating the right hinges can be challenging. Searching through the large selection of hinges at hardware stores can be a bit overwhelming. Cut down on the choices by knowing the major things to look for in hinges. The weight, shape and size of the materials you are using will determine what type of hinges you get.

The other thing to think about is if the hinges need to be reversible or not. Figuring out if you need right or left side hinges is simple. Just find out the way that the door opens. Doors that open toward you on the left hand side, them left handed hinges are necessary.

You also will want to consider the type of hinges you want to be displayed when the door closes. Do you ant a colorful hinge showing? Are you looking for a hinge that will be concealed? There are many different types to choosing from.

Ball bearing hinges are always lubricated. They are pricey and are typically reserved for heavy door mountings. High traffic doors benefit from these hinges.

Butt hinges are available in two varieties and they range in size form 13 to 150mm. The loose pin hinge has a pin that can be taken out with a screwdriver. The rigid pin is permanently fixed in the hinge.

Butterfly hinges are good for light weight doors. There are many different sizes and shapes to choose from and they are used with folding doors. A flush hinge is weaker than a butt hinge and it is good for cabinet hinges and light doors. Knuckle hinges have loose joints that are good to use when looking for decorative hinges. Use these for door mountings.

Offset blind hinges are made to let the entire door open and swing. Storm or screen doors will benefit from these types of hinges. If the hinges should project over the face of the door then parliament hinges will work well.

Pivot hinges are flexible. It can be used for recessed doors, flush doors and overlay doors. The pivot hinge does not require a door frame in order to mount it. This is a perk.

A spring loaded hinge is one that has a spring loaded contraption that closed the door without any assistance. You can change the tension on these springs when putting up the door.

Table top hinges are ideal when there is one leaf in a part of the wood that must be lowered. Concealed hinges are the way to go when working with a chipboard or MDF. These hinges range in size from 25mm to 36mm.

There are also a number of specialty hinges that can be purchased. They include T hinges, strap hinges and continuous hinges.
