Always taking the non-traditional approach, Google shocked and amazed the world as it release its web browser "Chrome" early in September 2008.
Because the features and benefits of Chrome tend to be complex, Google created their own "comic book" style features guide as well as gave a live demonstration of their product during the press conference to announce the product.
In Google's own words, they wanted to create a browser that would run web applications faster and with fewer crashes than they were experiencing with the currently available browsers, such as Mozilla's Firefox or Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The reasons for this are clear. With Google's employees spending most of their day doing most of their work using web applications that run inside of an web browser, having a fast and stable browser is important to their productivity.
To help achieve the goal of stability, Google built Chrome from the ground up so that each browser tab would run in an individual process within the operating system. This is similar to how desktop applications work and means that Chrome was built to be more stable. Having each tab be an individual process means that work you are doing in a web application or on a web page in one tab, will not cause problems for the work you are doing in a different tab. This approach circumvents the performance problems and crashes which happen in Firefox or Internet Explorer where a bug in the web app or website can affect all the open tabs in the browser. Anyone who has ever lost work in progress due to a random crash or hang in their web browser will certainly appreciate this feature in Chrome.
Beyond speed and stability, Chrome's new way of handling tabs allowed it to add new features such as the ability to pull one of your tabs out of the browser window to create a new window for that tab alone.
Another important fact about Google's Chrome browser is that the source code is available to software developers worldwide. Making the source code available as "open source" means that we'll see programmers around the world developing custom modifications and additions to Chrome faster and in more innovative ways than Google could have managed on its own.
The fact that Google released Chrome as "beta" software (it's version 0.2) surprised some early users. While most were surprised at the quick announcement and release of Chrome, many were expecting a more finished browser with more features, not one released at such an early point in its overall development cycle.
To put Chrome in perspective, it's best to understand that "Chrome was built by Google from the ground up to run current and future web applications well". On the other hand, Microsoft created Internet Explorer and Mozilla created Firefox based on the older concept of simply displaying web pages well.
Many say that the future of computing involves running more and more web applications. Google believes this and created the Google Chrome browser.
