It is well known that the first impression you make is important. Studies indicate that during an interview most interviewers make a decision about the candidate within the first ten seconds. Consequently, the way you dress for the interview is a decisive factor in this first impression. The majority of corporate-recruiting experts would agree with this opinion.

The outfits should ideally not be overly casual or flashy. Indeed the most important point is that you should be clean and neat. Wear an outfit that fits you properly and suits your body type. Wearing un-pressed clothes give the interviewer the impression that you do not care about your appearance and would not be good for your chances of obtaining the position.

The traditional suit is one of the best choices for wearing to an interview for both men and women. It should be restrained and quietly stylish. The suit has been seen as a symbol of prestige, power and confidence for many years. It also suggests that the wearer is successful. Because of this, it should contribute to your presence in any interview.

It is not a concern if you choose a black or colored suit, but it is important that it is a neutral color. The suit should be simple and not be a "fussy" design or cut. It should ideally be a single color. Remember that in some parts of the world, the cultural beliefs of some people do not permit them to wear clothes that are completely black. To wear a contrasting shirt or blouse with the suit, such as white or pale blue, should help to overcome this dilemma as black is generally considered to be the best color for the suit. Most experts would advise women to avoid wearing the obviously "trendy" such as baby-doll dresses or shorts. Similarly with men, the trendy suits should be avoided.

Accessories - Apart from the suit, accessories can also be worn. The rule for accessories is the same ? they should be stylish but not flashy. They should just act as enhancements for the body and not be of themselves obvious.

Appropriate accessories that can be worn for an interview can include a simple watch, subtle rings or a thin bracelet for the wrist. Women must take more care about the accessories they choose and they may have to remove some things that they normally wear. These things may include large earrings, nose rings, and chunky rings and bracelets etc. It is quite alright to wear at least some jewellery so long as it is not too obvious. Your choice of footwear should be considered. It should be strong and provide appropriate support for your feet. You should be able to walk properly and comfortably whilst wearing them and they should not slip from your feet. Therefore, the ideal footwear is closed in or lace up shoes.

Your clothing should say something about you, but quietly. It should not be allowed to overpower your personality. The interviewer is interested in what you have to say, not your fashion sense.
