Let's face it, no one likes to talk about the possibility of layoffs. We hear the whispers, and our stress level rises. How do you face this career crisis? Are there ways to turn a layoff into strengthening experience?

Layoffs can flood the market with hundreds or thousands of other job seekers who hold the same skills, all looking in the same area. This makes for fierce competition in the job market, with far more candidates than there are new jobs.

What steps can you take to ease the pain of unemployment? Can you make your job search a more productive event? Let's look at some of the ways you can turn around an unfortunate event and make it a creative endeavor.

Sometimes we don't have warning that a layoff may take place. There may be signs like fewer customers, more time in your day, fewer supplies being ordered, and the list goes on. But until it happens no one can know for sure that troubled times will translate into layoffs.

Changes in behavior in management can be a sign of a change in the corporate stability. When managers change their patterns and start to micro-manage they are really trying to reestablish control over their work situation. They may know something you don't, and they may be expressing their own fear of layoffs as well.

As soon as you have that first warning signal it's a good idea to gets your facts straight. This means pulling out your old resume and updating it. You may want to re-write the entire resume, giving it a freshness and new perspective. Remember to include qualities as well such as your punctual attendance and your willingness to go the extra mile.

Remember to focus some attention on your thinking and beliefs. There are many tools and methods that you can learn that will help you deal with the stress of a layoff. Anything you can do to empower yourself will serve you in your job search and interviewing process.
