Computer hackers and viruses are on the rise and protecting your computer with a firewall is a must when it comes to using the Internet. Using a firewall will protect you from hackers and viruses and also protect important data you have on your computer. These attacks are frustrating and can be stressful but rest assured, it's easy to avoid.
The firewalls available vary widely and you must determine which type is suitable for your computer. A computer that came installed with the Microsoft XP or Vista operating system is likely to have a firewall already set up and ready to use. However, you do need to make sure that it is turned on and working properly.
If you have one of the earlier operating systems, you will need to purchase your own software. Even with Microsoft XP, you may still want to purchase separate firewall software since the XP version doesn't get great reviews.
The many products available, include Norton, AVG, and McAfee and can be purchased in store or downloaded from the internet. Even from the leading companies, there are plenty of low cost versions available, with prices varying according to the sophistication of the software.
Once in hand and prior to installing your firewall, you need to take a few things into consideration. The program must be configured to permit the functions that you need, such as file and printing sharing. This is normally done during installation but can also be done later by using the documentation provided to change the settings.
Certain parts of the Internet can be blocked by a firewall. If you use a local area network or a router this may happen, so you should be aware how you connect. Accessing secured networks when you have installed a firewall is difficult.
Check with your IT department before installing firewall software to a computer connected to a network. You may need specific settings to be able to connect to that network.
