Aside from looking good, a top-notch media production also needs to sound good. Most video and animation productions at some point require the addition of sound effects to enhance the viewing experience. Certain sound effects, such as ambiances, work in the background to add realism to a scene that may have been staged such as in a restaurant or on a city street. Other sound effects are used to enhance a poor or missing recording such as a door slamming. Producers and video editors often turn to a variety of methods listed below to find needed sound effects.
1. A time-consuming but rewarding method is to create your own effects. Buy or borrow a digital recorder and gather your own background ambiances or do foley to capture specific sounds.
2. Get your sounds custom made for you by hiring a sound designer easily found online.
3. Many sites allow you to download free sound effects for your use. While cost effective, many of the sounds however may be of poor quality so search carefully.
5. Download professional .aiff or .wav files from online sound effect libraries. By doing so you can save money by only buying what you need and avoiding the unnecessary cost of huge sound effects libraries.
5. If you anticipate the need for hundreds of sound effects you may want to invest in a multi-CD catalog of effects across a wide array of categories.
6. Get a monthly or yearly subscription to an online sound effect catalog that will let you quickly search and download sound effects when you need them.
Get professional quality sounds by trying some of the above methods. As CDs become a thing of the past we might find that single downloads become the most efficient and effective way to get sound effects in the future.
