We all want our kids to be independent and at the same time help us with the chores at home. But before the kids start helping us around in the kitchen and learn a thing or two about cooking, they should be aware of all the basic precautions so that they stay healthy even if they are living and cooking alone.
Children must understand the concept of cleanliness first and foremost. They should be taught about what all bad things can happen if they don't maintain hygiene Kids should understand that why during cooking they should not lick their fingers, wash hands properly, not mix the cooked and the raw food etc. They must also be taught why it is important to heat certain food items to a particular temperature. All these small things will go a long way in keeping them healthy when they decide to face the battles of life all alone.
Discuss the entire recipe with the kids before you all start cooking. This will ensure that you don't miss out on anything and that all the ingredients are in place and the entire cooking process goes on smoothly. Try to stick to the exact procedure for the best results.
While telling the kids recipes, also tell them why and how a particular appliance is used. In case of electrical appliances, teach them how to save electricity by turning them off when not in use and how to protect themselves against electric shock by always keeping your hands dry and wearing bathroom slippers or shoes.
The kids must also know how to protect themselves from burns by always using hot pads while picking up or keeping the utensils on hot stove. Also teach them never to put a hot spoon or hot food in their mouth because it could result in serious burn injury to the tongue and inner regions of the mouth. Always keep a first aid kit in the kitchen and show the kids where it is kept.
Keep the knives sharpened so that any cutting work can be done quickly without any hassles. Also dull knives can be quite dangerous as they slip rather than cutting the surface of the vegetables.
The kids should be taught about why not to put water in fire and to immediately call for adults, neighbors and 911 in case of any emergency.
The kids must be taught not get tempted to taste the food until it is fully cooked. And even if you must taste the food, it must be done only using a clean spoon and the food should be allowed to cool down first. The same spoon should not be used twice so that the germs or the bacteria from your mouth don't get mixed with the food.
Use the free time during cooking to clean the dishes, kitchen counter, to put the balance unused ingredients and appliances in place.
Let your children cook a little right from the beginning so that at a later stage in life they can cook for themselves when need arises and not rely on junk food.
