There are many kinds of Mexican cookies, some of which are specifically for parties, celebrations, and others, which make a special treat at any time. There are Mexican wheat cookies, Mexican sugar cookies, Mexican painted cookies, and many more mouthwatering varieties. These cookies are all sweet and tasty and they literally melt in the mouth.
What are Mexican Wedding Cookies?
These are Mexican traditional cookies, made from shortbread. Mexican wedding cookies are very popular and they often feature groundnuts such as almonds, pecans, and walnuts. These cookies are served at Christmas, weddings, and anniversaries. Sweden and Russia also enjoy these cookies, calling them teacakes. Mexican Biscocho Cookies
Biscochitos originated in Spain. The Spanish brought the cookies to Mexico and they gained popularity there. Biscochitos are made with aniseed and dusted with cinnamon. Some biscochitos contain other ingredients, such as wine or orange juice, to enhance the taste. Cookie cutters are used to give them their unique diamond shape and it is common to serve these with wine.
Marranitos, Cochinos, or Puerquitos Cookies
Cochino, puerquitos, and marranitos refer to the same cookie but the name changes depending on the region. Sometimes they are known as "gingerbread pigs" even though ginger is not an ingredient in these Mexican cookies. Marranitos are shaped like pigs and their spicy flavor is due to the molasses used in the traditional Mexican recipe. Mexican bakers make their own molasses by placing brown sugar in cones and boiling it with water.
Once it has turned into the syrup it is then added to the dough for the little pigs. The cookie is very moist and rich in taste with a flaky top.
Mexican Churros - The Hot, Fried Snacks
Churros originated from Spain. They are scrumptious fried cookies that are found in both Mexico and other countries. Churros are made from a light, sweetened paste, which is piped into hot oil and fried until golden brown. Cinnamon is often added to the churros recipe. These are delicious when eaten warm and street vendors in Mexico make them fresh on the street and sell them there too.
It used to be hard to find churros outside of Hispanic areas a few decades ago because they were only available at sporting events and carnivals. Nowadays they are easy to find in Mexican grocery stores and local restaurants because Latin food is becoming increasingly popular with many nationalities. Some companies manufacture churros with an inner filling in a delicious flavor such as chocolate, strawberry, or apple. Many Americans have discovered the wonderful flavor of churros.
There are many types of Mexican cookie recipes. If you are new to these types, you might want to visit a local Mexican grocery store and try a few that are fresh from their bakery. Once you enjoy them, you will want to include them for your own celebrations. These cookies would be a hit at any party!
