A steaming bowl of delicious soup isn't just for the cold winter days. You could experience impressive results on the scale if you made soup a regular part of your diet!

Unlike most liquids, soup has a high satiety effect, comparable to solid foods. This is what makes the soup so wonderfully filling and satisfying. A Purdue University study found that individuals who ate soup consumed fewer calories overall. Researchers concluded that you could reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness by having a bowl of soup either before your meal or as your meal.

A Penn State study found that individuals could lower their caloric intake by 20% just by eating a bowl of low-calorie soup before their meal. Other than the creamy varieties, soup tends to be lower in calories and very healthy.

Did you realize that making and eating soup could free up time that you spend in the kitchen? Sure, you might have to do some dicing and chopping to make many soups, but a big pot can be enjoyed for a whole week, or you can freeze a portion of it for a later date!

Squash, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, onions, celery, carrots, and cabbage are all delicious and healthy when added to soup. You could knock out your vegetable requirements of 2-3 cups with a delicious bowl or two. These vegetables are also an excellent source of vitamins and minerals.

A large pot, filled with diced vegetables and low-fat, low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth, can make a delicious appetizer or meal in less than an hour. It takes no culinary skill to make a mouthwatering soup. Tasty, low-calorie recipes abound!

Another wonderful thing about soup is that it is generally packed with fiber. Adults should consume between 25-35 grams each day. Eating soups that are full of vegetables, beans, or whole-grains can get you close to that goal in no time.

Probably the biggest concern that people have about eating soup is the fact that it's usually high in sodium. Most manufacturers now make low-sodium versions of their most popular soups, but making it at home, from scratch, will allow you to control the ingredients.

There are delightful soups that are served cold and there are even soups made from fruit! If weight loss is your goal, quit thinking of soup as being a seasonal food, and enjoy it year-round. You can lose weight while feeling satisfied and full!
