The agony of living with acne on a daily basis is compounded by the trauma of having to deal with lesions and scars left behind by the acne. This is because most people believe that acne is a short term problem that has to be dealt with, whereas the acne scars are permanent blemishes that refuse to go away.
Today, a number of treatments that successfully cure acne scars are easily available. However, some acne varieties leave behind scars that are so deeply embedded in the skin that no treatment can wipe them out totally. It is therefore extremely important to ensure that acne scars do not form at all. The trauma of dealing with acne on an ongoing basis and the high expenses incurred on futile treatments can be avoided if acne scars are not allowed to form from the start.
What we will be discussing here are the many forms of acne scars which exist, the ways to treat them and last but not least, how to prevent them by tackling the internal causes of the condition.
An introduction to the types, causes and diagnosis of acne scars
Studies show that severe acne which develops in the deeper layers of the dermis, causing nodules and cysts to form, is what mostly causes acne scars. There are other causes also like infection, cystic acne which works its way deep into the dermis and an overgrowth of skin tissues. Squeezing or popping acne can also cause scars.
It has also been found that some people's skin is more susceptible to scarring from any type of acne. After all, the healing process of the acne wound is dependant on several factors and stages of healing like the skin's reaction to inflammation, uneven deposit of collagen and the formation of new tissues and capillaries among others.
Whatever may be the causes, to avert the possibility of permanent scarring, start treating your acne scars as soon as you can.
Acne scars are normally of two types--those caused by a loss of skin tissue or those caused by the formation of excess skin tissue.
Formation of scars because of skin tissue increase
The acne scars which form because of increased skin tissue are usually Keloids scars. Keloids scars, which tend to strike people with dark complexions, emerge when excessive collagen is produced by cells during the healing process. These scars tend to be irregularly shaped and firm and are usually smooth.
Scars which form because of the loss of skin tissues:
Acne spots: the skin surrounding these scars generally turn brown or red. In most cases they gradually fade away by themselves or after the application of some topical scar treatment. A similar fading away can be noticed in the case of post inflammatory hyper pigmentation but the use of MSM has often hastened the process.
Ice-pick lesions: as the name suggests, these acne scars look like ice which has been riddled with an ice pick. Most commonly they appear on the cheeks and the scars can sometimes be deep and sometimes superficial. These scars are more difficult to get rid of than acne spots.
Depressed fibrotic scarring: these scars usually result from deep nodules. They are white, rigid and have sharp margins and steep sides.
Atrophic scar macules: Acne scars of this type are small and white and are generally soft and distensible. Other types of scars include boxcar scars, characterized by vertical edges and round indentations and rolling acne scars which are the result of the surface of the skin getting stuck to the subcutaneous layer are other types of acne scars.
Treatment of Acne Scars
Just as the discoloration that accompanies an acne attack fades away slowly, so do most acne scars. However, some scars prove more difficult to smoothen away and require some manner of treatment whether it be topical treatment or surgical cosmetic intervention.
Different scars require to be tackled differently. And there are even scars which require to be treated using a combination of more than one elimination method. A large number of treatments exist for smoothening over scars and these include: pulsed laser technology, dermabrasion, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, punch techniques, collagen injections and creams.
Collagen injection involves injecting collagen or fat under the skin. This treatment is generally administered in the case of soft scars, whether deep or shallow. However, the effects of collagen are not long lasting and injections have to be repeated every 6 months. Also, it should be noted that collagen has some adverse side effects and allergic reactions could also develop.
Microdermabrasion is a scar treatment in which tiny particles are passed through a vacuum tool. The intention is to scrape the external top layer of the skin. The method stimulates and enhances the growth of new cells but is only effective in cases of mild scarring.
Laser resurfacing is more effective for treating newer scars rather than older scars by evening out the surface of the skin thereby making the scars less visible. Since the laser levels out and resurfaces the skin, side effects like increased inflammation, infections and an increase in acne scars have been known to happen.
Punch grafting is done by cutting the acne scar right down to the fatty layer of the skin and then repairing the hole thus created by grafting a small piece of skin.
Different types of scars have to be treated differently. Let us tell you about the recommended treatments in respect of the various types of acne scars. Alpha lipoic acid acne cream and MSM are excellent for use on post hyper pigmentation marks. Laser resurfacing or dermabrasion are the recommended treatments for ice pick scars. However, these scars do not respond positively to Collagen injections which should only be used on flat or thin scars. The Keloids acne scars can be smoothened with steroid injections, crytotherapy, silicone gel dressing and with pulsed laser treatment combined with carbon dioxide laser vaporization (where there is not too much thickness or too much redness on the keloid scars).
Prevention of Scars after Acne
Ideally, acne scar treatments should be tried as a last resort because they are highly expensive and have too many side effects. The best approach would be to first try and get rid of the acne. This will work only if you identify the imbalance in your system which is causing the acne. Try to cure it by using natural methods and avoid taking topical acne treatments, medication that is available over the counter or steroids. Once you have corrected the internal symptoms that caused the acne, you will notice the acne disappearing gradually without leaving any scars. Moreover, you will be saved the expenses and harassment of taking treatments that cannot cure the acne permanently.
We already know that acne and its resultant scarring are not a skin problem but are caused by internal imbalances. Once that is fixed there will be no acne and consequently no acne scarring.
You yourself can do away with the acne scars and do this even before they form by going to the root of the problem deep inside you. This way you will stop the very process of acne formation and be able to live your life free of acne and consequently, of acne scars as well. It will give an impetus to your existence as you will not be burdened by the emotional load of having to carry disfiguring scars on your face.
