Acne causing scares are more common than doctors originally believed. Most of the time, these scars are mild, but in some cases the scars are very significant and obvious to others. Prevention and quick treatment of even mild acne is the best approach to minimize the risk of permanent acne scars.
Breakouts on our face cause our skin to act in one of two different ways. Either more tissue will be formed and raised, or tissue will be lost. When the tissue is formed, the result is hypertrophic (overgrowth or enlargement) scars or keloids.
When skin is injured, the cells respond with the production of a substance called collagen, and overproduction can cause keloids and hypertrophic scars. These Keloids and hypertrophic scars are fibrous masses of collagen that are of irregular shape and are smooth and firm.
The formation of keloids after injuries to the skin has been found to be genetic. If a person's family history shows formation of keloids after tissue injury, that person is much more likely to form a keloid. African Americans have shown to be especially predisposed to forming keloids. Also, some blood lines have shown a genetic predisposition to forming hypertrophic scars.
More common than scars resulting from increased tissue formation is scars formed by loss of tissue. There are several types of this type of scaring. One is the ice-pick acne scare, which gets its name from their superficial or deep wounds that are small in diameter like an ice-pick wound. The deeper the scar is, the harder to the touch it is, while softer scars are more superficial.
Hard, deep scars may actually be larger in diameter at the base than at the surface of the skin. Depressed fibrotic acne scars are often big with steep edges and sharp margins. They are very similar in appearance to deep chicken pox scars. Soft acne scars, both superficial and deep, have slanting sides that fuse with the surrounding tissue.
A person with breakouts on his back or chest is liable to get follicular macular atrophy. The chest or back becomes full of tiny white wounds raised slightly above the surface of the skin, resembling whiteheads. A person may suffer from this for long periods of time, and it is also called "perifollicular elastolysis."
Treatments for acne scars are readily available in stores and on the internet, but frequently the nasty side effects outweigh the benefits. Acnezine is the only natural treatment for acne scars that can reduce the appearance of acne scars without any unwanted side effects.
