Halitosis is very noticeable strong odor of the mouth. It is embarrassing to the person who has this disorder, and causes the people around ones who have this disorder to shy away. Most people know halitosis as bad breath
Halitosis has a variety of causes. Many times this disorder results after food gets stick between the teeth of the person who has bad breath. The odor comes if a person fails to floss properly or does not brush for long enough of a period of time. Sometimes halitosis is also caused by food becoming stuck into other areas of the mouth, such as in the grooves of the tonsils, in the throat, or up towards the nasal cavity.
Smoking is another cause of bad breath. If your friends don't seem to mind the smoke from this unhealthy habit, they will certainly notice the stench of your breath if you happen to speak near their face. In the same way, excessive drinking of alcohol can also cause halitosis.
All these causes of bad breath are linked to the development of anaerobic bacteria in the mouth. These are actually the microorganisms that produce the foul odor commonly known as bad breath. In order to eliminate these bacteria, all you have to do is brush and floss regularly and set an appointment with your dentist once every six months.
Once you notice that you do have bad breath, immediate treatment is necessary. If you don't take the steps in eliminating this condition, don't be surprised if your friends start making excuses not to be close to you or even avoid you altogether. You might have a few honest pals who will tell it like it is and say to you straight to your face that you do have bad breath. If so, you're lucky. Some people go for months without realizing their situation and just wonder why their friends seem to be disappearing one by one.
Oftentimes, people with bad breath really won't know that they do have it unless another person tells them so. When a friend decides to let you know the truth, it might be a bit awkward at first, unless you have a really close friendship. In any case, you mustn't feel offended. Instead, be grateful. At least you will now be aware of the situation and you can take the necessary steps to overcome it.
If a person is unaware that they have bad breath, they should think of all the experiences that they have had. Has that person ever been rejected a kiss? Has that person noticed that after one or two dates the other person stops coming around? If any of these are a possibility, and no one has informed the person with halitosis that this is the case, then the fact should be considered upon reading this article.
It's time to find out the truth once and for all. Very simply, this is what you have to do. Cup one of your hands, hold it in front of your mouth and exhale. After 3 seconds, smell your hand. Rotten eggs? There you have it. You weren't a lousy date after all. You just have bad breath.
Before you get mad at your friends for not telling you this right away, remember that it's really not a very simple task. If you reverse the situation and you know that your friend has bad breath, can you really just say straight out, "your breath stinks"? Perhaps, if you're that close. But in most situations, letting your friend know the smelly truth will take some amount of planning and waiting for the appropriate moment.
The best way of doing it would be the direct method, which as mentioned, will only work if you have the kind of closeness and familiarity that can tolerate such candor. If you try doing that to someone you've just met, you can forget having a relationship with them after that. The embarrassment and awkwardness will just be too much to handle. To avoid upsetting your friend or making them feel uncomfortable, tell it to them privately and in as a nice manner as humanly possible.
If your type of relationship with them allows it, you can say it in a lighthearted way but let them know that you're serious. However, don't give them the impression that you're judging them for it. You can even turn it into a private joke between the two of you eventually. Afterwards, you can even help them in seeking treatment for their bad breath. If you find a way to let them know the truth in a nice way, it can even make for a stronger friendship.
There's no question that having bad breath can certainly dissuade some people from nurturing a close friendship with you. It will be harder as well to find and keep dates if you don't remedy the situation quickly enough. In most cases, the solution is as simple as brushing and flossing regularly. Others may require more intensive solutions. At any rate, it is always good if you're surrounded with honest and candid friends who can warn you whenever your breath starts to stink again.
