Plastic surgery prices have dropped like a rock in the last two decades. Affordable plastic surgery is now within the financial grasp of most people. And because procedures are affordable, millions of people are trying to figure out how to get the best price from the best doctor in their area. It can be a daunting task, but with a little preparation anyone can find a good surgeon for the procedure they want at a price within their budget.
The first thing to understand is that insurance is probably not going to pay for any of it. Of course there are exceptions. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, insurance companies will cover plastic surgery if it is done to correct a medical condition, deformity, or injury. So the rhinoplasty (nose job) you've been considering may be covered, if your physician convinces the insurance company that it is necessary in order to improve your breathing ability.
What many people don't know is that any physician who is licensed to perform surgery can perform cosmetic plastic surgery. That doesn't mean that it is a good idea. Board-certified plastic surgeons have extensive specialized training in the field of cosmetic surgery. In addition, their experience level in plastic surgery procedures is many times higher than that of a general surgeon. Does this mean that a general surgeon should not perform their procedure? No. What it means is that it is up to the consumer to decide whether this surgeon is the best person to do the surgery for them. The difference between general surgeons and board-certified plastic surgeons is reflected in the price they charge.
It is usually advisable to shop around. Get several opinions and several estimates. Consumers should make sure that they understand what each estimate covers. Does it cover pre-op and post-op care? Does it include the cost of the operating theater and the attending professionals? Also, they should note on the estimates the experience level each surgeon has for their particular procedure. Only when they compare apples to apples, are they able to make a sound decision.
The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reports that the most commonly requested plastic surgery procedures are: liposuction, breast augmentation, breast reduction, hair replacement, rhinoplasty (nose job), abdominoplasty (tummy-tuck) and eye-lid surgery.
This same report provides an average cost for these procedures. They are:
(1) Nose job, $4150.
(2) Tummy-tuck, $5150.
(3) Silicone breast implants, $3900.
(4) Breast reduction, $5450.
(5) Liposuction, $3000.
(6) Eyelid surgery, $2900.
If the price quoted to the consumer by their surgeon is significantly higher or lower, they should find out why, before they agree to the surgery. Large price deviations suggest that there are differences in the type and quality of care, and differences in the skill and experience of the surgeon. Once they understand the reasons for the deviation, they'll know what decision to make.
