The tools of the trade are focused on the teeth such as the toothbrush and the toothpaste, but the gorilla in the room may not be tooth decay but Gum Desease instead. The teeth are very important to chewing your food and preventing tooth decay is critical to keeping your teeth healthy. The gums are the holders of the teeth and if they go bad the teeth will fall out and replacing them will be very difficult.
The most common Gum Desease is gingivitis and most people are familiar with the term from television advertisements for dental products. Gingivitis gets the name from the gingival tissue of the gum that surrounds the bottom of the teeth in the mouth. If people practice poor oral health and allow plaque to stay on their teeth, it can feed an explosion of bacteria under the gums at the base of the teeth.
If the bleeding persists past a couple of days, it may show the presence of Gum Desease types other than gingivitis. If the bleeding worsens and the inflammation continues the disease may be periodontitis instead of gingivitis. Periodontitis is the strong uncle of gingivitis and not a disease to fool around with or ignore.
Gingivitis is not a painful Gum Desease and can be cured usually be a good cleaning either at home or by the dentist. Mouthwash can fight the growth of the bacteria associated with the disease with alcohol or other antibiotic type ingredients. The daily rinsing of a mouth with these agents can reduce the bacteria growth to normal levels in a few days. If the action is combined with flossing the effects are very rapid.
Gingivitis is a minor Gum Desease in most cases but can be a warning sign of bad health habits and can lead to more advanced diseases. One of the more destructive diseases that can start with gingivitis is periodontitis. While gingivitis is relatively calm and painless, periodontitis is not either.
Another tool for Gum Desease prevention is flossing. Flossing is able to get directly at the connections between the teeth and gums where bacteria like to hide. The flossing action helps move the bacteria into the open mouth for removal. Flossing will also serve to show signs of bleeding gums earlier as a warning of gum inflammation.
Some causes of bleeding gums other than Gum Desease are leukemia and diabetes. Diabetes has the tendency to affect many parts of the body adversely, but the gums are an early target for problems. Bleeding gums may be a sign of undiagnosed diabetes that has just manifested first there. If it is diabetes then it will foster the growth of other gum disorders soon.
The key preventative to Gum Desease is repetition of brushing, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash on a twice daily basis at least. The cleaning actions of the products is fantastic for preventing tooth decay and highly effective for gum disorders as well. The combination of these actions will be effective at preventing diseases in your mouth and on your gums.
