Since the early parts of the 20th century, a serious campaign to get every man, woman, and child brushing their teeth after meals has been largely successful. It has significantly improved the overall dental health of the population and reduced dental problems. After a short time, dentists realized that brushing alone was not enough to win this war and added extra forces with dental floss.

The basic dental floss is thin strips of nylon filaments that allow a patient to clean effectively between the teeth. Brushing is not fully effective at removing food caught there and it can form a basis for bacteria and tooth decay. It adds to bad breath, looks bad, and can help cause permanent harm to your teeth. Dentists throughout the world see flossing as essential to dental health as brushing you teeth.

Tooth brushes have limitations though and it is especially noticeable between the teeth. The soft bristles of the brush can get between the teeth with a very little force and it often is not enough to dislodge all of the food particles. Tooth picks help but another tool is required to really clean out the gaps. Dental floss has become that tool for most people.

The standard style for dental floss is a small container with a round spool inside to roll out the floss as needed. A small metal clip near where the floss comes out aids in cutting off the appropriate length. The spools hold quite a bit of floss and last for several months of normal use.

Nylon filaments are the common substance for dental floss and can be made in a variety of thicknesses and lengths. The filaments can be waxed to help smooth the way between the teeth. Some varieties add mint or cherry flavoring as a coating to encourage a happy flossing experience. There are types that add fluoride as a coating, but they are not too popular yet.

A new innovation for dental floss is the floss device or holder. It normally looks like a forked branch from a tree with a main stem and two outward reaching appendages. The floss is threaded through or fastened upon the upper parts of the device before it is used to insert between the teeth.

Flossing usually requires a person to take a length of floss then wrap it around their fingers and place it between their teeth. The floss is rubbed against the tooth sides and down between the tooth and gum. This effectively cleans the tooth and the gums to promote good health. Bacteria cause most bad breath and dental diseases and do not flourish without the food particles present.

Inventors have created floss holders to place a small segment of floss in the device and use it on your teeth. It seems a popular solution and doesn't require floss wrapped around your fingers. It provides benefits for reach and angle to get the floss between the teeth.
