Most of us put our lives into the hands of our doctors. After all, our doctors are responsible for letting us know how we can take the best care of ourselves and are the people who are responsible for fixing us when we are broken or sick. Is it any wonder that a Doctors background check is a common tool that is used by patients who are trying to choose a new physician?

No two doctors are alike. After all, it isn't like there are doctor factories mass producing them (no matter what they say about their training). Doctors get a variety of training and will have individual strengths and weaknesses.

When conducting your doctors background check you need to be very up front with your doctor about checking into his or her background and history. Most doctors will not mind this. After all, they should not have anything to hide. A doctor who is hesitant or irritated about the impending background check is probably not a doctor that you would feel comfortable with anyway.

Most doctors background checks include the following information:

* Physician's education credentials

* Awards earned by the physician

* Articles the physician has had published

* Any hospital or academic appointments

* Any special expertise

* Associations or affiliations the physician is a member of

* Board certification status

* Their license status in every state

* Any records of professional misconduct

* Their doctor credential ratings

* Nationwide malpractice court judgments

* A nationwide search for disciplinary action

It is important to also know that most doctors get sued at least once during their career. There have been measures put through congress to limit the amount of frivolous lawsuits brought against people in the medical profession, but the truth is that patients will sue their doctors even when the doctors did nothing wrong.

A doctor that has a large number of malpractice lawsuits showing up in their records is not a good thing. Most doctors will have at least a few malpractice suits against them, but when there are a lot of them it's time to look for a new doctor.

Before doing an extensive physician background check, it may pay to do a little up-front checking on your own.

Make time to sit down and talk with each of your doctor candidates before committing to any one of them. You're in the drivers seat here - you don't need them, they need your business.

Make sure that you're totally comfortable before choosing your new doctor. Ask them anything that pops into your head while your interviewing them. If they think your time-wasting questions, choose a different physician. They work for you, not the other way around!

You will want to get a list of references from the doctor you're interviewing. Get a patient list to see how they feel about the care that was provided and get a list of colleagues to validate whether or not they feel the physician you're interviewing is well qualified.

Chat with a few locals in your town to see what they think about the doctors you're considering. This can often provide great insights into how a doctor really treats his patients rather than relying on a hand-picked list of patients provided by a doctor who's looking to expand his practice.

Make sure to ask your doctor all of the same questions you will have answered on an official doctors background check. Write down all of the answers the doctor gives you and check them against the official doctors background check search results. Any discrepancies should send up red flags.

Make sure to contact anybody listed on the background check if there is a discrepancy between what is on the reporting agencies record and what the doctor told you.

You should do whatever you need to do to feel comfortable with your doctor. After all, your doctor is the person who is responsible for keeping you alive for as long as possible. Remember that doctors will try to sell themselves to you. Doctors are famous for having large egos, so it is sometimes necessary to get information from impartial parties.

By doing a doctors background check, you have many answers to your questions on paper, right in front of you. You can clearly differentiate between your candidates and make an informed decision.
