Possibly the most important part of your home bar are the bar stools. Bar stools will help define the theme of your bar, in addition to the bar stools being where you and your guests will spend many hours enjoying drinks and conversation.
When you begin your bar stool search, you should consider the functionality of your bar stools even before you consider the style. This may be even more important than, and should be done before, choosing the theme for the bar.
The most important feature of the bar stools is the height of the stools. The most typical (and comfortable) height for the bar stool's seat is between 11 and 12 inches below the bar top. The first consideration when selecting a bar stool is the height of the stool compared to the bar top. Measure the height of the bar top from the floor and select a stool of the appropriate height.
Next, you should think about the foot rail on the bar stools. You more than likely won't need to get bar stools with foot rails if your bar has the traditional foot rail attached to it. However, if your bar doesn't have the foot rail attached, you will probably want to choose bar stools with foot rails. It's very uncomfortable to sit at a barstool and have no place to rest your feet.
Another feature of a comfortable bar stool is its back. If you plan on spending much time at your bar, you're probably going to want backs on your stools, whereas backless bar stools work fine for a 50's Diner style bar. This is always the case if there is a television in your bar. If there's no back to the bar stool, you will more than likely get up before long.
Another facet of the bar stool's functionality is whether or not it swivels. Generally more comfortable than stools that don't swivel, are swivel bar stools. The floor under the bar stools then will surely get scratched and worn much quicker if you use bar stools that don't swivel. Even if you choose bar stools that swivel, you should still put floor protectors on the feet of your bar stools to further protect your floor.
Once you've made decisions about the functionality of your bar stools, you can now look for those features in bar stools that fit your bar's theme.
Keep in mind that finding 33" stools with foot rails, if you're trying for the art deco look of the 1920's and 30's, may be difficult. Also, 24" bamboo stools that swivel may be just as hard to find.
Even though there are several designs and sizes to select from in both new and antique bar stools, it is many times a good idea to have your bar designed according to your bar stools.
