In these days owning a camera and taking photos is fairly simple. Gone are the days when you had to be knowledgeable about shutter speeds and the like. Developing and printing photos have not totally disappeared but have taken the back seat as far as the common man is concerned. For him it is fun or a hobby. With a digital camera he can happily click away to his heart's content.
All that is needed is a digital camera and a fast broadband Internet connection. If you already have both for quite some time, the matter becomes even more simpler as you are bound to have accumulated a sizable number of photos during the course of your random ramblings or during your family vacations.
To sell photos all you need is a fast Internet connection. It is of course understood that you have a stock of photos. If not take your camera out and start taking photos. Another way to augment your collection is to get the photos of your friends and acquaintances. The more the better. It doesn't matter as to what photos you have for practically anything can be sold on the Internet. A lot of patience and fortitude is the main requirement.
You photos are not purchased based on the sex or age of the photographer. It is the content that matters most. The people who purchase photos come from all walks of life - web designers, travel agents, magazine editors, students and even banks and chefs. Each one of them has a specific requirement and the place they look for it is the Internet and that is the place where your photos aught.
Another would be to make use of Photo Stock Sites. These are online sites where you can upload your photos and wait for them to be sold. If you have had a camera for some years, then you are bound to have a stock of some photos (hence the Photo Stock Site) taken during your vacations with your family. With all the instructions required to upload photos posted on the site itself, these sites are fairly easy to use. There are a profusion of such site which can be located through the Net.
Alternatively, you could build your own site. If you have the necessary know-how, that is, exposure to SEO methods and coding techniques, then you can build it yourself. This also requires some time and some dedicated effort on your part, but once constructed, what photos you keep on the site, how long you keep them etc., is your decision. You own the site. But all the other logistics will have to be taken care of by you. Patience, resolve and dedication is required.
An admirable way of selling photos, without using the Internet and which is applicable for those purists who still swear on their analog cameras, are photo competitions. Some more effort has to be put in by you in that you have to get the photo printed, find a suitable frame, hunt for the places where these competitions are going to be held and get you exhibit entered. Though the exposure is limited, it has its plus points. Whether your photo wins a price or not, droves of people do come and see it and photos do get sold here too.
It is better to start with the stock photo option initially and buyers start trickling in, it is time a web site of your own becomes a reality. A simple variation is to ride piggy-bank on some established web site that caters to just such business. Of course you will have to pay a fee for the use of their services. So, if you have a lot of photos and want to sell them, try the methods outlined above and see what you get. If you do not have photos, go out and get them or get some from your friends or relatives and get started. And Good Luck to you!
