If you want to install a bay window by yourself then there are some important tools which you need to get ready, including: - A tape measure - A Circular saw - A Crow bars (or Pry Bar) - Drill, including a selection of bits - Miter saw - Spirit Level - Stapler - Utility Knife - Caulking gun - Tin snips

You will also need some materials such as: - The bay window unit itself - Support brackets - Roofing paper - Shingles - Nails - Nails - Silicone caulking suitable for external use - Insulation - this is normally fiberglass.

If you are making an existing window bigger, or are installing a new window then you will also need 2x4's.

Understanding Basic Steps of Installation

1. Decide where you want to install the window, if there is an existing window then remove it. Measure the bay window, make sure that this is accurate. Mark the size of the new opening required and use the circular saw to cut the larger opening. 2. Framing - Next you need to build the framing for the new window. You will need to cut through studs and installing a new header. 3. Install support braces - If your window is five feet then you will need to use at least 2 support braces. Larger windows will need even more. 4. Put the window into place - You should lift the window onto the support brackets and slide it into the opening. If required shim the window so that it is level. 5. Construct the roof of the window. Put the frame on top of the window and nail it into place. Make sure you fill the space with insulation. Then fasten the felt to the frame and cover it with roofing paper. Install the guttering and flashing and then lay the shingles. 6. Next you need to fit the skirting to the bottom of the windows. 7. Use caulking to seal all of the edges of the window.

The list above is a fairly basic set of installation procedures, these are by no means everything that you will need to do. You should buy a window unit which has detailed instructions to help you out. It is a good idea to follow these instructions down to the last letter so that the installation process can stay on track.

It's a good idea to have some of your friends helping you out on these projects. They are quite difficult, and you need 3 hands to do some of the tasks! Taking the old window out shouldn't be very difficult, however you should make sure that you have some plywood available in case you can't finish the entire project in a single day, and need to board it up.

If you spend some time planning where to install the bay window then you will no doubt be very pleased with it. It will become the focal point of your room and adds some extra charm to your room. These windows will also add value to your house and make it much more desirable.

When you want to sell the house then buyers will find this bay window very desirable and memorable.
