As you begin to consider home security systems you will realize that many companies will not only sell you an alarm system for your home, but they are really trying to sell you a contract to monitor the security system for you. Some of the home security companies will actually give away the system free just to get you to contract with their monitoring service. The main job of the company is to respond quickly, efficiently and politely when your alarm goes off.
The ideal, as with many purchases, is to get a recommendation from someone you know with high standards. But even good word of mouth is no substitute for first hand interviews. Companies usually have salespeople that will tell you what you want to hear.
You should look at purchasing a home security system like any other important purchase in your life. If you can get recommendations from friends, neighbors and relatives, that can be helpful. But don't take their word alone. It is worth it in the end to do your own interviews with each company you are considering. Yes, you'll be talking with salespeople, and they'll be giving you the hard sell. To make it past all the fluff, make sure you ask for a copy of the different monitoring plans they offer, including the equipment. Meet with at least three companies, maybe more. Get your information together and start comparing the companies. Write down your questions as you go.
Then you need to call the companies you are interested in and talk with a manager. Ask your questions. Then you'll be able to make your decision. This process may take a few hours, stretched over a few weeks. Another good resource to check is a consumer magazine for reviews of each company's performance.
The main criteria for the technology part of your decision is how well the company can adopt the system to suit your needs. If you choose to go with the absolute latest technology such as wireless systems and cameras, motion detectors and talking alarms, they need to be set up in a way that is easy for you to operate without having to call the security company all the time to get help running it. You also will want a system that you can add options to in the future if you decide to. Just talking to the company about their technology recommendations will give you an idea of how up to date they are, even if you do not understand all the lingo.
Don't be afraid to ask questions about the personnel who will be coming into your home to install the system. Are they licensed? How long have they been with the company? If they use subcontractors, are these employees installing systems fulltime, or is it only a side job? There is nothing wrong with asking for proof that the installers have the proper qualifications to work in your home.
The old-fashioned aspect of the business entails the use of reliable, competent staff. Grill the operations manager on things like licensing, firearms training (if the guards are armed), experience (ex-police officers?, former airport guards?) and more. Arriving quickly when an alarm is triggered is important, but they should perform well once they're there. Sometimes there are false alarms. But companies have protocols to minimize those. When the real thing happens, the guards need to be prepared to act somewhat like police officers would.
Your home security company is providing a valuable function for which they get paid good money. Apply high standards that go well beyond selecting the lowest bidder. The alternative is not pretty.
