According to the FBI and DOJ Statistics, 25 percent of American homes have been the victim of a crime. Too often people sustain from installing proper home security until a break-in or burglary takes place. Up until the day of the robbery people thought their house would never get broken into. Burglaries can happen in the best of neighborhoods to the worst of neighborhoods, and both types cause devastating losses. These losses can be both physical goods and the feeling that the home is no longer a safe haven is gone. After an event such as a burglary the aftermath could be overwhelming to the adults, but even more so if there are children; since the kid may not understand that this happened just for the belongings and was not intended to hurt anyone.

Over 50 percent of the burglaries that occur happen during the day and while families are on vacation. This is due to the fact that majority of Americans work during the day and are less likely to be home. Not only are they not home, but mostly likely their neighbors are working too; making the burglary much easier to commit without being detected by the neighbors. Since the neighbors are not home the burglar can easily raid multiple homes on the block in one day, taking advantage of the hard working citizens. Knowing when burglaries tend to occur still does not help in preventing the acts.

There are many routes to take in avoiding break-ins while away. Having a dog to watch over the house may prevent some altercations, but there are ways for buglers to get away from dogs; with a dog the owner could be held liable if the burglar is injured by the hound. Families may also buy signs that read protected by a security system or company. This also has a good chance of stopping some burglaries, but not all of them. The individual may still be willing to try the house and test the "security system." Another way to protect the house is by installing dead-bolt locks on the main entrances. This will keep the door shut throughout the day, but it will not do anything to prevent an intruder coming in through an unlocked window or open window; which is a common method of entering houses and apartments. Installing a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) home security system is becoming an ever more popular choice of home protection. Even if the system is not connected to a protection response agency that notifies the police, the alarm will most likely scare off the intruder.

The noise is usually loud enough for neighbors, barring that they are not far down the road, to hear the noise. The burglar does not know whether or not the system contacts the police and he/she is usually not willing to stick around to find out. The last and most reliable home security system is one that has an alarm and also calls the house to verify whether the police need to be notified. The system detects the trespasser and sounds an alarm; within 60 seconds, usually shorter, the response team calls the house and asks for a pass code to verify the person on the other end is really the home owner. If the wrong pass code is given, then the police are contacted with the suspicion of a burglary. The alarm system with the response team covers two types of protection, and it allows the home owner to have pets; which means that the house can have up to three different types of protection, offering the most efficient way to stop burglaries.
