So you've decided to go the installing DIY intruder alarm systems route and now need to know a few things that you should keep in mind before all the action of installation begins.

On average people who have not had an alarm system fitted to their homes are three times as likely to have their homes broken into. But even so there are going to be occasions when a person forgets to alarm their system and this will then provide a burglar with an opportunity to access it. Yet a home which is fitted with an alarm system whether installed professionally or by the home owner is more likely to deter a burglar than a home that isn't.

As you begin looking for a decent burglar alarm system to add to your home, there are a few things you want to pay attention to. These following items are what you need to keep in mind.

1. A good set of perimeter sensors which can be attached to doors and windows as these are often the first points of entry for any would be burglar to gain access to a property. Today you can either a traditional system (using cables) or you can go for a wireless one.

2. Next you might want to include some motion detectors within your home security system. Locate these in the main living and traffic areas of your home. If you have pets, be sure to get detectors that can be modified to take them into account. After all, you don't want the alarm system going off just because Fluffy decided she needed a drink of water or to run around like crazy because the phone rang.

3. The last major parts to pay attention to are the control panel and keypad system. The keypad should be placed in a handy location for turning the system off as you come in the door. The control panel may best best served by being placed out of sight in a cabinet or even closet. It is the job of the control panel to interpret the signals being sent to it by the sensors so it can do what it needs to to send the alarm.

While you are spending the time and resources to install a burglar alarm system for the safety of your family, consider getting better windows, doors and especially locks. As these, the doors and windows, are the main ingress points, anything that can delay a potential thief, making the time to break in longer, can suddenly have your home not looking so attractive as a source of goodies. The longer he takes the more likely he is to get caught.

Finally before even beginning you search for a specific home alarm system, take a look around your home at all the areas you need to protect. How many windows and how many doors? What can you do to your landscape to remove any cover a thief might have to do their work in? Decide the best locations for all the parts of your system and you will find that installing DIY intruder alarm systems will be the best thing you could do to protect your family.
