I love reading and I love YA books. I'm definitely no teen, but I find it doesn't matter. I've decided that the publishers, authors, and even marketing gurus that are attracted to the YA market are right up my alley. They produce exactly what I like in a book. And I just don't think there's a better reason to read something than the fact that you enjoy reading it. So I keep reading.
Having been obsessed with YA books for a while there are more than a few that I've come across that are definitely worth reading...more than once if my history is anything to go by! If you're a YA reader that hasn't read one of the following recommendations...read it! If you've never read YA...pick one of these and give it a shot! If you've never been able to get into reading...maybe you haven't found the right book! Try one of these!
1. The City of Ember and The People of Sparks are a set that shouldn't be separated by Jeanne DePrau. She did such a good job of predicting the future that I found myself having a hard time after the books ended separating fact from fiction. The books seemed so inevitable and straight forward. I found myself altering daily habits and philosophies in response to the read and I just don't think there's any better compliment than that!
2. Dream Jordan's Hot Girl came my way in the form of an ARC (Advance Review Copy). I really enjoyed it and made sure to post a review on the site that provided the copy (LibraryThing.com). The book offered great portrayals of friendships (good and bad), the foster care system (from several different perspectives), and of a teen making a decision to change her life and then working hard to do it.
3. Son of the Mob by Gordon Korman just makes me laugh out loud. For me, that is high praise because a book that actually makes me laugh can actually make me a happier person and if only we could ALL have a book that made us happier people that we could read when the need arose the world would just be a much better place. Don't you agree?
4. Cassandra Clare's City of Bones is the first book in a series (the Mortal Instrument Series). The third book is due out in Fall 2008 (very shortly!) This book is filled to overflowing with fantastic legends come true, magic and the unreal, war and love. The series encompasses everything...and I mean everything. It even reaches all the way back to the fall of Lucifer. There's no way that any reader could walk away from this series thinking there was nothing to walk away with; it's got something in there for everyone.
5. Shannon Hale's Goose Girl is a retelling of the traditional fairy tale. I tend to like fairy tale retellings, but I can honestly say out of all the fairy tale retellings I've read, Goose Girl is my favorite. It was just so lilting and sweet while being passionate and strong at the same time. I enjoyed the style of the writing, the characters, the setting, and the story. It all moved together perfectly from beginning to end. The sequel Enna Burning may have been even a smidgen better and I wouldn't allow anyone I liked to miss the third in the series, River Secrets, either.
6. Randy Powell is the author of Is Kissing a Girl Who Smokes Like Licking an Ashtray? That title alone got me to pick up this book and buy it. It seemed like one of those "tell it all" titles, but I still couldn't resist it's pull. The book didn't disappoint as they often do when I rely upon the title alone. This was a very ironically charming story that I've read more than once.
7. I've got a confession to make before I name the next book. There are a few special individuals out there who happened to ask me for book recommendations shortly after I stumbled across the blog of Beth Kephart. I was so impressed with the smooth quality of her writing that seemed to say so much without disrupting the rhythm of the writing that I recommended her book, House of Dance, without having read it first! But even though that recommendation wasn't based on personal experience, I did no harm and you can all still trust me to give you good book recommendations! All is still well in the world.
8. This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen. This is another of my all time favorites when it comes to books for teens. The character, Remy, really became quite real to me with her insistent refusal to let go of her lack of faith in love. I enjoyed watching the many (and varied) characters Dessen created crash and collide through the story looking for their own spot to be.
So there you have it; 8 pieces of young adult literature you should definitely go out and try. If you're a book buyer jump on B&N.com and get a few with free shipping. If you're into the deal you get with used books check out Abebooks.com and see if they've got a few listed from the same bookseller so you can save on shipping as well as price. Or if you're one of those special readers that have a favorite bookstore that you enjoy dropping by periodically...jot down the names of a few that sound intriguing and ask if they're in stock the next time you're in the area. You won't regret it!
