Teaching children values is very important in today's ever changing world. Yesterday's children were brought up in a completely different lifestyle with small communities and close families. Today there are more choices and opportunities to learn and grow but there are also hazards along the way. As a parent you know that without values your children will have fewer good opportunities in life. Here are 5 steps for teaching values to your children.

1. You need to identify your values. What values do you as parent feel are important? We all want our children to be honest, dependable and self-reliant. These values dictate the way you spend your money, how you spend your free time and even what kind of car your drive.

2. Do you want your children to have your values? This might be difficult to come to grips with but you need to be honest. Your children will adopt many of your values simply by what they see you do. If you have values that you want to change or values you want to add, then now is the time.

3. Ask yourself different questions. Are you content with love or money? What would you do if $1,000 fell into your lap? If your day was suddenly freed up what would you do with the extra time? There are no wrong or right answers to these questions but your answers may help you understand your values.

4. A monthly family meeting is very helpful. Set some time a side each month where you can meet with your children without any distractions. Discuss your values and the events in your life that helped you frame them. Ask your children about their values and the reasons behind them.

5. Monthly value. Do not try to instill every value into your children all at once. Each month select a value and focus on it. Why is it important and beneficial? What do your children think about it? Will it lead to making better decisions? Honesty, self-reliance and goal setting may be good values to start with.

Teaching children values starts with us as parents. You need to first decide what your value system is and then set an example for your children. A monthly meeting is a productive method for teaching values to your children.
