Commercial dog food - what a minefield. You know the scenario you go to the pet food store or supermarket and want to buy the best dog food available, after all our dogs are companions and part of the family.
The difficulty is just how many varieties there are on the shelves. I mean where do you begin. Well I try with the labels but most of it doesnt make sense, or is so small I can't read it. As usual I would leave with my dog food and a nagging doubt that I did not know what was in the food she was eating.
The bottom line is you don't know what your dog is eating. The pet-food industry spend enormous sums of money to ensure that we believe all their claims. The food may be labelled as "meeting all your dogs needs" but unfortunately that is not so.
These are some of the things you need to bear in mind the next time you go shopping for your dog food.
Dog food contains numerous additives, colourings and preservatives.
Dog food is packed with dead animals, blood, bones, head and feet and drugs used to euthanize sick animals can still be present in your dogs food after manufacturing.
Many pet foods state that they contain "human grade" ingredients. This really is not the case.
A number of diseases in dogs have been linked to commercial pet foods and pet food ingredients.
We all want what is best for our dog so please remember the petfood industry is extremely profitable ($25 billion per annum worldwide). They use state of the art advertising which will not enable you to make an informed decision regarding your dogs diet. You must step back from the hype and learn what is really in your dogs bowl.
I have owned dogs for many years and for most of this time was completely ignorant to what was in the "premium" brand dog foods. It was only after my "newfie" died and her death was linked to her diet that I really began to research what actually goes into commercial dog food.
