Of the hundreds of breeds of dog that you can choose from these days, Labrador Retrievers are still some of the most popular. This is really not surprising, considering how appealing and wonderful their appearance and temperament are. They are easy to take care of, and have a very calm, non-aggressive personality, which makes them ideal pets.
If you are interested in getting a Labrador Retriever as a pet, then you are going to have to determine where you are going to get one. You have a few options, including buying from a pet shop or backyard breeders, but if you want to ensure that you are getting a happy and healthy puppy, the only option you have is to go through reputable Labrador breeders. Pet shops and backyard breeders are casual breeders and will not be as educated and understanding on the breed or on what they need to do to take care of them properly.
One of the most important things you can do when looking for a dog breeder of any sort is to ask questions. You should ask a lot of questions. You should avoid any Labrador breeders that are unwilling or unable to answer these questions or to provide you with the information that you are looking for. A good breeder will expect you to come armed with a bevy of questions and will have the proper paperwork and information to offer you.
You should also avoid any breeder that is unwilling to let you meet the mother dog of the litter, because this probably means that the mother is not in the best of shape and this will give you a good idea of what condition the puppies are in. Good breeders guarantee to show potential buyers the mother dog, and as well guarantee that their puppies are free of genetic disease that are common in the breed and will even replace the puppy if these diseases should crop up.
Breeders that should be avoided on the other hand, are those that are in it more for the financial means and who could really care less about the dogs and do not end up taking proper care of them, either out of a lack of knowledge or a lack of consideration.
Choosing a dog is a huge commitment, and one that you need to take very seriously. There are many ways to locate a responsible breeder, including visiting area kennel and obedience training clubs in your area.
Visiting local area kennel and obedience training clubs in your area is a great way to get an idea of the different breeders in your area, but one thing you should avoid is using the newspaper to find a breeder, because they have no trouble placing their dogs and so they will not need to advertise themselves.
You can also speak to your veterinarian as they will be knowledgeable in this matter and be able to help advise you which breeders to avoid.
