As the cost of air travel is always on the decline it seems that there is a comparable swell in demand. Large numbers of us are either dog or cat people and some of us (like | enjoy | take pleasure in taking our pets on a journey with us when traveling by rail or car but when we consider visiting overseas by air travel not many of us think about taking our pets even though cheap flights are available.

Rules and Regulations of Pet Air Travel

While it may have been common, years ago , for airlines to allow pets to be carried on a passengers knee during air travel it is unfortunately almost never the case nowadays. This is resulting from the massively increased security rules now enforced by the airlines or governments. Also pet air travel can be rather difficult as a pet can sometimes become distressed or irritable to such a degree that it becomes a bit of a nuisance and certainly incredibly difficult to manage .

You will be happy to read that it is sometimes the case that some airlines, while confining a passengers small animal to the cargo hold for the period of the flight, will permit you to monitor the transfer. However there are no guarantees that this is allowed by an airline so you must make sure that you discuss this while or before booking your flight.

Other Important Considerations

1. The Pet Container

When choosing which pet carrier to use for air travel the three most important things to keep in mind are the type, weight and size of both the pet carrier and your pet. You must always ensure that there is plenty of surplus space around your pet to allow it to move about but also to make it feel more comfortable during the flight.

2. Security Issues of Pet Air Travel

At all times your pet box should be clearly visible to the airline staff to avoid loss, which is always possible with any air travel. All pet boxes should be marked clearly with both the destination and a return address and full contact details. Furthermore it is strongly advised that you include the details of another person in case of emergencies when you can not be contacted. As well as having labels on the exterior also consider also adding some to the interior. Also take measure to make sure that your pet has a close fitting collar with an ID tag or similar. The risk of loss is least during direct flights.

These days you can also get your pet electronically tagged however this should be done well in advance of your trip. Such devices should be fitted by a vet. During this visit your creature could be examined furthermore you can discuss your destination with the vet who will advise you of any precautions you should take, or of any restrictions and, in the case of international air travel, any inoculations that may be required.

By reading and following the above pet air travel tips you will be equipping yourself with important facts that will help increase the safety and comfort of your animal during the trip. I would strongly advise that you take the time to read as many similar articles, and speak to as many people, as possible just to make certain that everything has been considered.
