You might want to get into refinishing tubs. If you have an old tub at home, applying another shade of color on it is definitely a more affordable choice than getting a new one. There are however some considerations when it comes to refinishing.
Doing it Yourself
Your first order of business would be to decide to get help or not. These days, it is possible to refinish your tub without professional help. This is a good choice since there are refinishing kits that just about give you every minute detail involved in tub refinishing. You might find the job naturally enjoyable and less costly if you choose to get your own hands dirty.
You should however, only attempt this if you are quite a handyman and if you have had some successful experiences with home improvement. Refinishing a bathtub requires a lot of patience, common sense, skill and attention to detail. You would have to meticulously clean the tub, handle chemicals and spray paint with a steady hand.
If you do not have the traits needed for DIY jobs, then you should just back down and rethink your options. You could ruin a perfectly good tub and bathroom if you aren't up to the task. Get a good professional through referrals if you want to make sure that everything is done close to perfection.
Work Safety
Bathtub refinishing probably won't kill you on the spot. It does have its dangers though. This is especially since you will be handling acids, chemicals and paint. If you want to do the job yourself, make sure you have the right kind of protection. Aside from a ventilator for yourself and the room, you also need a respirator, long gloves, goggles and work clothes.
Following Steps
These days, you just need to buy a good kit to get things done. You only have to read the instructions and carefully follow them. Of course, you have to determine first if you are good at following possibly technical steps. In general, refinishing includes such steps as tub clean-up, surface preparation, crack filling, masking, removal of faucet parts, base coating, and spray painting. Do not attempt the final step if you have a shaky hand or a poor motor control. You would probably get a tub with an irregularly painted surface.
Using Liners
There is still another option if you do not want to go through complete refinishing. Some homeowners choose to install liners instead. These are ready to use covers that you can just place over your tub. The use of liners however is often only advisable if you have a fairly undamaged tub. If you apply a liner to a tub that has seen better days, your cover may not last very long.
You might think that there is nothing much to refinishing tubs. But it really is a demanding task and you have to be sure you can do it.
