Many people shy away from the great opportunity that affiliate marketing provides because, frankly, they associate this type of marketing with ripping people off. They believe they are going to be pushing or "hyping" people into products those people don't really need or want.
It is absolutely true that there are dishonest marketers out hyping snake oil and miracle cures, and get rich quick scams every day. It is also true that you can pick out any profession at all and find the same type scammers. There's just no way to get around the fact that many people are dishonest.
But ... Is affiliate marketing itself dishonest? My answer is no. I know that it has a bad reputation. I know that there are "work at home" scammers trying to get your money at every turn. That isn't what affiliate marketing is.
As the economy slows down more every month, people everywhere need extra income to make ends meet. Affiliate marketing can be just the opportunity they are looking for if done correctly. You really can have an opportunity to make the money you need from that part time job, and later the money from a full time job, but still control what you do and when. Even better, you are in control of how much you make.
The most important principle you must let sink into your mind is that you are not "selling" anything as an affiliate marketer. Affiliate marketing is really just another method of advertising. It is a particularly good form of advertising for businesses with good products, but no advertising budget. Now businesses of all sorts at all levels are using it.
It is the job of the business and the product to make the sales. The job of the affiliate marketer is to find out who the product could help, or who needs the product already, and then make sure those people find out about it. It is just that simple. If you understand that principle, the rest of the equation will fall in line.
