When it comes to getting good traffic to your online business, there are many techniques that you can use, but pay per click advertising is one of the most effective. Whether you are a business that has just taken a step into online marketing or you are well established and just trying to help customers find your site, pay per click advertising, sometimes abbreviated to PPC, is something that you cannot afford to ignore.

When you hire someone to manage your pay per click program, that company will make sure a link to your business will appear at a specific time and place on the search engine of your choosing. Whenever a prospect clicks the link to go to your website, you are charged a pre-arranged sum. This sum is determined by what is called the search engine quality score. It is made up of your bid price and clickthrough rate. While this is pretty simple, there are a few things to keep in mind.

The first is, where and when should your ad show up? Google AdWords is a pay per click program that answers this question handily. Essentially, you will choose a certain set of keywords and when these keywords are entered into the Google Search engine, a link to your site will appear to the left of the natural search results. For instance, if you sell dog grooming supplies online, one set of keywords that pulls up your site might be "poodle daily grooming."

Don't underestimate the power of Google, Yahoo or MSN. This is a potent method of advertising. 50% of all sales on the internet are preceded by the use of a search engine.

When you use the pay per click advertising you are taking advantage of the fact that when people use the search engine, they are in a mood to find your services. One reason that people are so annoyed by spam is that it jerks them away from what they were doing. When they are using a search engine, they are in a receptive state of mind and coming across your link will feel like a positive thing rather than an annoyance.

Pay per click is a great way to stretch your advertising budget. Remember that you will only pay the provider if someone clicks on your link, meaning that you can do some experimenting. With a program like Google AdWords, you'll be able to change your keywords around on a daily basis. You can find out what keywords work for you and which don't. You can make keywords that are too specific, or ones that are too general, pulling in hits that are only vaguely interested in your site. With the PPC program Google AdWords, for instance, you can set a daily budget. If you've find that your daily budget is maxed out after just a few hours, you want to make your keywords more specific!

The online competition is fierce. Make sure when your customers are looking to buy from you they have no trouble finding your website. Use pay per click targeted advertising to achieve your sales goals.
