Just in case your PIN number or password has been taken without your knowledge, you should change them randomly from time to time. It is better to make the changes randomly than at regular intervals.
Make sure you do a background check of companies you are buying from online if you do not know much about them. You can do this by going to the Better Business Bureau website. You can do this for any company to see how reputable the company is.
Next, when you use your credit or debit card, keep your PIN number or password hidden from anyone that might be watching you. You can't allow anyone to see this information. If you notice someone trying to watch you type in your PIN number, you should consider changing it ASAP. Don't be afraid to tell the person to look away because you will be typing in personal information. This is also where changing passwords or PIN numbers randomly can help.
Make sure to keep the rest of your personal information concealed as well, when you are paying bills or at any other time. Keep your wallet or purse safe from possible thieves or anyone who might snoop through it. It is best to simply memorize your important personal information so there is no risk of someone finding it on a piece of paper. If you can only remember some of your personal information, it should be your social security number. You can then store your social security card somewhere safe at home. The only time you should give your social security number over the phone is when you contact the Social Security Administration.
It is important to conceal your personal information at all times as just one of several steps to prevent identity theft. If you carry a wallet and/or purse make, sure you know where your valuables are at all time. Personally, recalling numbers in your mind rather than carrying them in your material possessions is safer. In other words, remember your Social Security Number at least and store the card in a safe place. You should never give your Social Security Number over the phone lines, however when contacting the Social Security Administration you will have no choice.
