Stun guns offer in themselves an excellent form of non-lethal protection from increasingly common crime. However, this great source of security can actually result in greater trouble if one does not use it correctly.
The stun gun is essentially a battery operated device that transfers the charge in the battery to the two metal prongs located towards the top. On contact, these prongs deliver a shock to the attacker that interrupts the nerve signals between the muscles and brain and thereby causes temporary paralysis.
How to handle a stun gun properly:
Hold the gun steadily before you leave your vehicle, or place of shelter/hiding.
Turn the gun on, but do not touch the trigger until you are actually ready to use the stun gun.
Do not hold the stun gun close to you, but hold it out steadily. Brandishing it in the air can be dangerous as even a small touch can disable you.
To disable the attacker quickly, target the shoulder and hip areas as it paralyzes the limbs, preventing a possibly dangerous retaliation.
Hold the trigger down and keep the stun gun in contact with the attacker until he/she is down. Do not pull away the stun gun after an initial shock.
Test the stun gun frequently to make sure that it is in good working order.
Keep extra batteries in your car or somewhere accessible should you even need to use them. Make sure that you keep the batteries charged at all times.
Make sure that it is legal to carry a stun gun in your city or state by asking a local law enforcement official.
Touch the prongs to something metallic after each use to eliminate any charge left on them. Make sure that you turn the gun off before touching the prongs to something metallic.
Avoid leaving the stun gun under your car seat, as a stray charge in suitable conditions can start a fire in the gas tank.
