Web design's most important rule is to make sure your site performs under any condition such as different web browers. Not everyone uses Internet Explorer anymore. You also want to keep fancy graphics to a minimum. This can be overwhelming to your site's visitors. Keeping your site simple is what attracts attention.
Tips for a well designed site
1) Leave out splash pages if you want to have a higher performing web page.
Splash pages are becoming more popular with sites today but many of them have obtrusive graphics that can overwhelm your visitor. If you want to have a splash page on your site, just keep the page simple and include only a few graphics as to not scare off your site's visitors.
2) Avoid banners
Websites in the past had a lot of banners which were useful at the time but nowadays they're just a nuisance. Using to many adds makes your site less credible and your visitors will either ignore them or just leave your site. Instead, use affiliate links in the text of your site so people won't view it as just advertisements on your page.
3) Navigating your site should be easy
Navigating around your site should be simple enough for anyone to use. You want to keep you navigation simple by not using flash menus or multi-tiered menus that can easily confuse people. If it's too hard for someone to navigate, they'll just find another site to go to. Including a site map on your site will make it easier for a person to find what they want.
4) Make it clear to the visitor where they are
It's easy to get lost on a site that includes many pages and making sure this doesn't happen will keep your visitors looking. To make sure they don't get lost, include clear titles on every page and add a different color to hyperlinks that have already been visited. This will keep your visitors happy and not straying to your competitors site.
5) Avoid too much audio
If you wish for your visitors to stay long enough to read the contents, do not loop your music file in a way that irritates. While some music can enhance the experience, even the most beautiful of sounds becomes irritating if it is played continuously. If adding audios seems like a good idea to you, do make sure you provide some form of control such as muting or volume control so that your visitors can adapt to their surroundings. If you use all these tricks of website design effectively, you will in time know that your visitors will likely return again and again to your site.
