People go to school to study, go through experiences and to learn more. When they finally finish a particular phase, they get a diploma. This is perhaps one of the most important documents a person can treasure. Diplomas are definitely valuable, but do you know there are so-called institutions that give out fake kinds? These are the diploma mills. Also called degree mills, these are organizations that gives out diplomas to people, even if there's little or no academic studies involved. Diploma mills do not have the proper educational standards, making the diplomas they give out worthless.

Generally diploma mills, does not have the certification or recognition of official accrediting bodies as they operate without the supervision of the educational board or any official institution or board. However, these organization often claim that they are accredited by a non recognized body in order to lure the public to thinking that their institution is accredited or authentic.

The marketing of diploma mills are very deceptive, because they claim that they are backed by a fake organization that gives accreditation. They can also trick people into thinking that the business license they hold is actually a kind of government endorsement. The names of these diploma mills are also made to sound reputable.

Because the diplomas they give out are often used for fraudulent purposes, diploma mills are considered illegal in various countries. One very good example is in Australia. If you call an institution a "university", it can be considered a criminal offense, unless the institution received the approval and accreditation of the Master of Education, Science and Training.

Usually, diploma mills are seen in websites offering online education and degrees. Often times, students can just "buy" their way through the course, paying for the diploma instead of working hard to get it. Some online degrees also give a lower number of course work.

It is very important to check if a certain educational institution is accredited or not. For online degrees, one can call the university or college in order to verify the authenticity of their offered online course. The applicant may also check the state educational board to check if this certain academic institution is registered or if they are accredited.
