The number of bilingual children in America is increasing as more and more parents realize the benefits of teaching children to speak Spanish. It is no secret that the Spanish language is growing in importance, and many parents want to make sure that their children will benefit in the future by being able to speak it fluently.

Young children, especially those under the age of ten, have a much easier time learning a second language than adults do. That's because their brains are still developing and have the incredible ability to store different languages in separate areas, unlike the brains of adults which store all languages jumbled together in one area. It is this unique quality that enables children to learn to speak everyday Spanish with far less effort than an adult.

Teaching your child Spanish is not hard at all. There are many tools that are specifically geared towards children that make the learning process fun. Spanish children's books, interactive software, online tutorials and learn to speak Spanish audios CDs are all great teaching tools for young children.

Unfortunately, there are several misconceptions about teaching a child a second language while they are still young. Many parents are afraid of having their children learn to speak everyday Spanish before they have mastered English because they believe that their learning skills will be compromised by trying to learn two languages at once.

Some parents believe that teaching children to speak Spanish will hinder their ability to speak English properly. The reality, of course, is that learning multiple languages at a young age actually improves a child's English skills, and bilingual children generally speak much better English than children that were never taught a second language.

Teaching children to speak Spanish can also have a very positive impact on their reading abilities. Learning a second language helps develop a child's cognitive skills, so their reading skills are often superior to those of their classmates that only speak English.

Fear that their child's speech will be delayed by trying to process two languages is a concern voiced by many parents with young children. As there is no set time for a child to begin speaking, this really is not a valid concern at all. There is a possibility that it may take a bilingual child a little longer to start talking, but not by much. Children begin to speak anywhere from eight months to sixteen months, so even if it did take a child a little longer to process two languages before they started talking, there is plenty of leeway.

Fluency in a second language is an incredibly useful skill that can provide your child with numerous benefits in the future. Teaching children to speak Spanish at an early age can only help a child, and certainly will not do them any harm. So do a little research and find some interactive lessons or learn to speak Spanish audio CDs that are geared towards kids and start teaching your child how to speak Spanish today.
