As 4 out of 5 American people suffer from the painful affliction of hemorrhoids, it may be helpful to know what causes hemorrhoids. You may also be interested in just what hemorrhoids are. Simply put, hemorrhoids (also called piles) are veins in your rectum which have become enlarged and are quite painful.

You can have two versions of hemorrhoids. Like previously mentioned, the internal veins can swell and form what are known as internal hemorrhoids. Since they are inside the body, you can't feel or see them unless they are severe. The other kind of hemorrhoids, external, can also enlarge. These protrude outside of the anus and thus are seen and felt quite often.

Not a pleasant scenario, is it? But why does this happen? Do you consistently have a hard time having bowel movements and have to 'force' them out? The most common of hemorrhoid causes happens to be constipation. Constantly straining on the toilet puts strain on the walls of your intestines, and the intestinal wall veins swell up and become hemorrhoids.

Another one of the biggest hemorrhoid causes is pregnancy. Due to the usual constipation that can occur during pregnancy, along with the increased pressure of baby weight, this can easily bring about hemorrhoids. Many expectant mothers find that the discomfort from hemorrhoids outweighs morning sickness.

Some other hemorrhoid causes include:

- Don't sit for too long without getting up/walking around for a few minutes after every hour or so of sitting

- Don't stand up for too long without sitting down for a few minutes after every hour or so of standing

- Don't read while sitting on the toilet, because this causes you to sit longer and modern-day toilet bowls put extra strain on the intestinal walls due to their design, which is the last thing you need

- Not getting enough fiber and water into your diet, both of which help lubricate the bowel movements and make them softer and easier to pass

Also, overweight people have a greater chance of getting a hemorrhoid affliction. And anyone with a family history of hemorrhoids has an increased risk, too.
