From the 15th of July to the 20th of July this year the World Youth Day event will be held in Australia with Sydney as the host city. World Youth Day 2008 is forecast to attract hundreds of thousands of the worlds Catholic youth. And for the first time Australia's youoth will have the opportunity to see His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in person.
Because of Australia's location in the world, World Youth Day Sydney may not attract the 400,000 or more that attended the last WYD in Cologne Germany. However organizers expect over 225,00 of the worlds youth to gather for the week long celebrations At Sydney's Randwick Racecourse.
Youth can be defined as adolescent, teenager, young person or young people. At what age a person is considered to be a "youth," differs all over the world wide. The United Nations define youth as being the period in a person's life between childhood and adulthood who are between the ages of 15 to 24.
Young people face new challenges as they develop during their youth. Not only do they leave behind the ways of childhood and learn the ways of adults but there are also physiological changes they must deal with. In most cases family and friends will help and support them during this period. Events like WYD2008 go a long way in helping young people as it provides the opportunity to meet their peers and discus common issues.
We all need support and reassurance at times in our lives and none more so than the period of youth where a person will experiment in various ways as they strive to establish their unique identity in the adult world. This experimental phase can be trying for parents who understand the changes taking place and need to adjust to this new experience.
The home is a child's first place of learning and while there is no guarantee that a well taught child will become a valued member of society, it is incumbent on parents to do their best for them. As the child moves into youth their is no less responsibility for parents. It is in youth where others outside of the home start to have a real influence . The people may be friends,teachers or anyone for that matter. As long as these relationships are supportive and the influences positive our youth will flourish.
World Youth Day Australia will provide our young people the opportunity to connect with God as one, to celebrate and give thanks for all God's work. In the world of uncertainty that we live in it is vital that todays youth receive the strength needed to overcome the challenges. Pilgrims from across the globe will unite together in June to show the world that the faith of youth is strong and that with God's grace all the challenges will be met and overcome.
