I remember watching the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. I tuned in to watch the men’s platform diving, and from the ten meter platform, the views of Barcelona were breathtaking. You could see the sparkling Mediterranean Sea behind the divers, the deeply-tanned skin of the competitors, and the village streets lined with palm trees. It is no wonder millions of people visit the city of Barcelona each year. And now is one of the best times to visit the beautiful jewel of the Mediterranean.
If you are planning on purchasing tickets to visit Barcelona, there are some costs to consider. Travel to Barcelona from the United States will require a US passport. For adults, the cost of obtaining a passport is around $100, and can take up to a month to receive your documents. Be sure to plan for this amount of time for your passport application to be processed when planning your trip to Spain.
The next thing to consider is airfare and lodging. Airfare can get quite competitive, so you can find very reasonable deals. In a recent search, I was able to find a combination of airfare and accommodation for around $1000 per person round trip. Of course, rates and availability may vary, so in order to get the best possible deal, check for multiple dates. Airfare will also vary depending on your departure city, so check multiple airlines from multiple airports.
Once your airfare and hotel is established and your Barcelona tickets are on their way, you can begin to plan your itinerary. If you are planning on travelling in September, you can plan on attending the La Merce Festival, which celebrates the Patron Saint of the city of Barcelona. The week surrounding the 24th of September is dedicated to the celebration of the day of La Merce. There are all kinds of activities centred around the festival for people of all ages. It is considered the wildest and most colourful festival in Barcelona, and is one of their most popular holidays. You could also plan to stick around through to October 12, which is Columbus Day. Of course, Queen Isabella of Spain granted Christopher Columbus the funds to sail to India in search of treasures, where he mistakenly discovered America and proved the world was not flat. It is an amazing, historical time to be in Spain.
Whatever time of year you decide to travel to Barcelona, you are sure to fall in love with the beautiful Mediterranean city and its expansive culture. Enjoy world-class restaurants, beaches, and shopping, as well as luxurious hotels and amenities. Take in breathtaking views of the city on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, and bask in the warm sunshine of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
