A lot of people tend to go abroad for their summer holidays, but with everyone being more careful with their money, holidays within the UK are looking more attractive. We are going to look at some great holiday areas within the UK that you may or may not have considered for your next holiday.
Wales
Wales is an up and coming tourist destination with increasing numbers of visitors each year. Most people visit the country to partake in walking, visiting historic attractions and shopping. Overseas visitors made 1.1 millions trips to Wales in 2006, with the majority coming from Germany, Ireland and USA. With tourism levels increasing, visitors are helping out the Welsh economy with around 8% of the total jobs in Wales are now related to the tourism trade.
The capitol of Cardiff gets the most visitors with around 9.6 million visitors a day, but surprisingly people spend more money in Conwy.
Here are some of the most popular places to visit in Wales
Cardiff – This is an obvious choice with it being the capitol of Wales. Places of interest in the city are Cardiff castle, Museum of Welsh life and Llandaff cathedral
Swansea – The second largest city in Wales and has many great attractions such as the national waterfront museum, Oystermouth Castle and the Swansea marina.
Bangor – Bangor is between the mountains of Snowdonia and Menai Strait. It is great for coastal walks and is close to one of the first modern suspension bridges.
Lake District
The Lake District is a rural area in the North West of England and a popular tourist destination. People tend to visit for its famous lakes, mountains and the Lake District National Park. The lake District contains the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike. Many famous visitors have stayed in the Lake District but a lot of people were drawn to the area by the book “Pictorial guide to the Lakeland fells” by Alfred Wainwright. First published in the 1950s but they are still used in modern times for finding walks in the area.
The Lake District is also famous for being associated with Beatrix Potter with many visitors wanting to see her family home.
Tourism is now the Parks biggest industry with around 14 million visitors each year, mainly from the UK but also Japan, Chine, Spain, USA and Germany.
The Cotswolds
The Cotswolds or “the heart of England” is an area of hills in west central England, but stretches between Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Somerset. The area is great for visiting on a relaxing holiday as it comprises of lots of small attractive villages that are extremely picturesque.
The Cotswolds were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1966 which was updated to include more land in 1990. The Cotswolds are a great place to visit if you are interested in walking holidays in extremely pretty surroundings.
