The Island of Gozo

Gozo is the perfect “get-away-from-it-all” destination. This is where one comes to relax and enjoy the essence of life. Among other services and tourist facilities, the island has two superb upscale spa resorts, one of which regularly makes the top 10 list of best hotels in the world. For the budget conscious, more modest, yet fine hotels are dotted around the 67 square kilometres island.

Vacationers who prefer to self-cater have a choice of renting holiday apartments or quaint farmhouses, complete with all the trimmings including swimming pools. At the other end of the spectrum is buying a pied ŕ terre for very reasonable prices.

Gozo is a popular hideaway for a number of celebrities who have acquired properties on the island, and it is not uncommon for visitors to rub shoulders with them in one of the many bars and cafes that dot Victoria or the resorts of Marsalforn and Xlendi.

Victoria, the capital, is also the island’s shopping hub. On the main square, it-Tokk, is a traditional open-air market; the narrow, winding lanes leading from the piazza house antiquarians, shops selling traditional Gozitan crafts such as lace and thick woollen rugs and, of course, stalls dripping with souvenirs.

Gozo has an overabundance of superb restaurants - disproportionate to its size - and these are not concentrated in one locality, but are scattered all around. Reaching them is simple, grab a cab or rent a car. Driving in Gozo is less hectic than in Malta and it is impossible to get lost. All roads lead to Victoria.

In keeping with the island’s quieter pace of life, the nightlife in Gozo is more restrained than in neighbouring Malta. For younger visitors there are discotheques, certainly Gozo has two magnificent theatres often hosting well known foreign Operas and popular singers as well as a cinema in the capital. But the real enjoyment that many holidaymakers take out of Gozo evening is going into the local wine bars and mixing with the locals over a glass of fine Gozo wine with an array of nick knacks such as the Gozo Gbejniet (cheeselets) which are simply unique.
