Are you considering buying a timeshare? Before you do so, make sure you are aware of the advantages and disadvantages of timeshare ownership. When you buy a timeshare you will be buying a time slot at a particular condo or vacation unit. You will be that slot at that resort permanently. Although timeshare are very popular I believe people don't look into what the disadvantages and limits are until after purchase.
Before buying a timeshare property you will have to consider whether it suits to your lifestyle and finances. Timeshare ownership is an investment in an exotic vacationing spot but the buyers may get disappointed if they are buying the timeshare property for its appreciating property value. The biggest disadvantage of time share is the lack of appreciation.
The resale market of timeshare does not increase as of other properties. In timeshare ownership you cannot oblige your friends and relatives and send them for a vacation to that resort because you would get blocked from going there in the same year.
There are often high yearly maintenance fees you are going to have to pay. These fees must be paid every year regardless if you actually used your time or not. When planning your trip at your timeshare there is a lot of time involded. Booking with your exchange company and dealing with taxes and other associated costs you were never aware of.
When you decide to purchase your timeshare you will have to figure out how you are going to pay for it. Traditional mortgages are not available for timeshare, so you will either have to pay the enire amount out of pocket or use another way of financing. Most people don't want to vacation in the same place every year, this is another big timeshare turn off for me.
If you are a spontaneous traveler timeshare ownership is really not for you. Timeshares are expensive (especially if you want peak season). If you want a specific resort it will be that much more. Besides how costly it can be some of the creative financing options available have interest rate at about 16%, can you say holy cow?
