For history buffs, a visit to a bed and breakfast can be a trip back in time. Not only are B&Bs often located in unqiue, restored homes boasting a rich history, they are often close to many historic sites and museums. A few bed and breakfasts are even within walking distance of Civil War battlefields; here are some inns guaranteed to provide guests a close encounter with history.

If your planning a trip to Gettysburg National Park, The Carlisle House is an ideal home base. The historic inn dates back to the early 19th century and is located in the historic district of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where many of the buildings were built either in the Civil or Revolutionary War eras. Guest rooms at this Pennsylvania bed and breakfast are decorated with antiques in period style. Several guest rooms have a whirlpool tub. Explore the local historic district, visit Gettysburg or perhaps enjoy a trip to Amish Country in Lancaster County.

At the Berry Patch Inn, Pennsylvania Dutch hospitality in a newly built log home is served up by hosts Charlie and Bunny Yinger with Strawberry Pancakes, waffles and peach berry muffins. This Pennsylvania bed and breakfast sits on ten acres just outside the quaint old town of Lebanon and is five minutes from Fort Indiantown Gap and a short drive to Gettysburg National Park and other attractions.

The Washington Plantation in Washington, Georgia, is located in an 1828 Greek revival Plantation manor that was home to both Federal and Confederate statesmen. Soldiers wearing Blue and Gray camped on the grounds in 1865. This is the town that Sherman didn't burn on his Historic march to Savannah. The dissolution of the Confederacy was signed one-quarter-mile away. A rose garden and Koi pond are located on the seven acre property where tables and chairs await guests returning from a day of sightseeing.

Battle Altoona Pass occured on the grounds of the Lake Altonona Inn in Cartersville, Georgia. The battle was an important Union victory, as the Confederates were attempting to cut off a railroad supply route from General Sherman. Aside from this bit of Civil War history, the inn itself dates back to the late 19th century and is part of an estate that was purchased in the 1700s. The inn's wrap-around verandas beckon to guests, encouraging them to relax and enjoy the view of the Lake Altoona marina and Redtop Mountain State Park. Less than an hour from Atlanta, this bed and breakfast offers close acces to many area attractions.

The Battle of Antietam marked the United States worst loss of life in any military battle. The Jacob Rohrbach Inn was in the middle of this action, serving as hospital for the many dying and wounded soldiers. The early 19th century Federal-style house was even hit by artillery fire during the fighting. The historic inn has been refurbished and includes a mix of period furnishings and reproductions in the guest chambers.
