Generally speaking, one of the harder decisions a couple has to make in planning a wedding is the honeymoon. While the actual destination may be of highest concern, it is important to note other concerns that follow couples during planning as well. Such concerns are the price of the trip, the ability to arrange the trip, the time and length of the trip and the popular "reception getaway." To help alleviate some of the stresses of these concerns are some considerations that engaged couples should ponder over while planning this special trip as a newly married couple.
The number one consideration should be the overall cost of the trip including travel arrangements, food, activities, souvenirs and etc. Although this is a trip that many couples want to be memorable, it also needs to meet the couple's budget. Therefore, a compromise between an extravagant affair and budget need to be realized. It is good to have what some call a "sink fund" in case the trip ends up costing more than expected or an emergency arises while away. A general rule of thumb to consider when planning is the honeymoon should not exceed the expenses of the overall wedding costs.
Also, couples must consider the degree of privacy they desire. Some prefer a trip that offers an enjoyable climate, allowing plenty of time together, without a lot of other people around. Others opt for a more lively location, with lots of activity. Really, it's just personal preference, but it should be discussed before planning begins.
Also, some family members, in particular parents, find it a good gift idea to provide a trip as a wedding gift. Don't let these types of gifts hinder your plans and arrangements. The gift giver will understand that arrangements have already been made. Also, no one knows what you want for your first trip together better than you yourself. Always remember there are options such as rescheduling or obtaining a refund for the gifted trip.
Now, when thinking of the destination, remember the key is to make it memorable. Don't get caught in a debate of whether you should travel to an exotic locale you may never get to see again or a locale that is more easily accessible. The decision should focus on what you are looking for in the trip, having a good time with each other and making memories that will last a lifetime.
Ultimately, planning the perfect honeymoon involves the ability to compromise between the wildest dreams of travel and the practicality of a destination to create a memorable post-marriage trip that can provide lasting memories for your years to come, and start your time as a couple off with some magic and wonder.
