In today's security conscious society, there are many new policies that make taking a flight more tricky than ever. What with limits on luggage size and weight, new security precautions and regulations on what's permissible to carry onto the plane, it can seem overwhelming. However, it's important to keep in mind that these requirements are there for your protection.

Keep up with the Changes

This is not always easy and things seem to change from week to week which causes more and more confusion for the traveler. However, turning up at the airport and pleading ignorance is absolutely no excuse and you will no longer get away with it. By far the best way to avoid any bother at the airport as far as your luggage is concerned is to make sure you know and understand the rules before setting off on your journey.

A good way to educate yourself about the latest carry on luggage rules is to go to the website of the particular airport that you will be flying out of. Although all American airports share the same overarching set of rules, some tend to interpret the carry on luggage rules differently.

The carry on luggage rules are even more complicated on an international flight. International flights tend to be under stricter security regulations and may be subject in part to the laws and rules of the country that you are flying into. On your return journey, you will again need to be aware of the laws and rules of the airport you are leaving from.

It might even seem as if some of the restrictions are more of a request than a requirement. You might be told to bring the bare minimum into the cabin as your carry on luggage. But you are indeed permitted to take luggage up to the maximum size and weight if you so desire.

Likewise, the Transportation Security Administration recommends that you pack all electronic items in your checked luggage, but you are still allowed to take them in your carry on luggage.

Avoid the Headache

No doubt you've witnessed a passenger at airport security who loudly refuses to obey the rules on carry on luggage. It's an awkward situation and one that delays all the other passengers as well. And they can't win - the staff is following the rules and you can't change their minds by making a fuss. Don't be that person; know the carry on luggage rules before you leave home.

Your journey will be easier, quicker and safer all round if you take a few simple steps to keep abreast of carry on luggage rules and regulations.
