Vacation time is at a premium for many of us. Unfortunately, the luxury of an unlimited supply of vacation time and vacation money is not a reality. In order to make the most of precious vacation time, wise planning is necessary.

When scheduling a trip the first thing that goes through many people's minds is "Where do we go?" This may be the most important decisions you can make when planning a vacation. Don't know where to go? Do some research! The internet is a wonderful resource for vacation planning.

You can find information on destinations, where to stay, how to get there, what to do, and where to eat. Another resource for vacation planning is your local bookstore or library. You can spend an afternoon thumbing through travel books, imagining yourself in an exotic locale.

Don't disregard asking friends, family, and even colleagues for suggestions on a vacation goal. It is usually beneficial to get direct information of a destination from someone who has already been there. They can guide you in the right direction and mention things you should evade. When considering your vacation you should keep numerous things in mind. Initially, who will be going on this trip? Will it be you and a spouse? Will you be traveling with parents or children? What about friends? Will it be a big group or a small group?

Once you know who is going, you then should think about the likes and dislikes of each of the travelers. For instance, it might not be wise to plan a rugged, outdoors wilderness trip for a group that consists of teenagers who would prefer to spend their time inside a mall. Not only would they probably not have a good time, but you have a good chance of not having a good time yourself. Plus, it might not be a great idea to go sailing if your group has someone who is inclined to motion sickness.

As soon as you have established who you will be traveling with and what their preferences are you can then determine a budget. Budget plotting might not put you in vacation state of mind, but it is a big part of vacation planning. Certainly, if you are extremely wealthy and have an unlimited amount of money, you can skip this part of the article. Many of us are not independently wealthy and must fix a budget when planning a vacation.

While fixing a financial plan for a vacation you must keep in mind many issues. Initially, how much can you spend? This may decide your destination. You may have fantasies of a villa in Tuscany but your budget might only allow for a cabin at a state park. Be sensible when fixing your budget. Not only should you plan for lodging and transportation, but also for food, gas, entrance fees to attractions, and souvenirs. Many may wonder just how much to budget for such things. Once your lodging and transportation is covered a good rule of thumb is to allocate $100 per person per day. This should cover most expenditure.

Your choice of destination will ultimately determine how much you should allot for daily expenses. If you plan to be a beach bum for a week and stay in a condo where you can cook many of your own meals you will need less money than if you were to plan a whirlwind trip to Europe.

In conclusion, take some time for planning and research and you can have a great time on your trip.
