Facts about New York City

New York City in the United States of America is one of the popular cities and it is officially called The City of New York. It was discovered as the commercial trading center by people of Dutch origin in the year 1625. Since 1970 it has been the largest and the biggest city in U.S.

Located at the mouth of the Hudson River, it lies on the eastern Atlantic coast, which is a natural harbor. It is the most populated city in the United States. Being situated on a natural harbor, the city has flourished as a trading city.

The City of New York is situated midway between Boston and Washington D.C and on the north eastern direction of the United States of America. Owing to its significant location on the natural harbor of Hudson River, this city has developed rapidly in trading activities. New York city has been basically constructed on the three islands namely Long island, Staten island and Manhattan island.

New York City was founded in 1670 by the Dutch. It was mainly used for commercial trading purposes, due to its natural harbor. Today, it is one of the world's leading centers for commerce and finance. It is also very famous for its politics, education, entertainment, arts, finances, and advertising. It is home to the United Nations as they are headquartered there.

New York City's neighborhoods and landmarks are famous all over the world. Wall Street, situated in Lower Manhattan is the leading global financial center in the world, and is home to the New York Stock Exchange. Tourism is a very important revenue generating aspect to New York City.

After World War II the city saw an economic boom and became the world's major economic power. The United Nations Organization also has its headquarters in New York showing the political influence of the city. Home to the New York Stock Exchange on the famous Wall Street, New York is one of the major centres of trade and commerce and the financial hub of the world.

Big Apple, Gotham and the City that never sleeps are some of the popular nicknames of New York City. Different languages are widely spoken in the city. Nearly 36% of the total population in the city was not born within United States.

Film industry is another area where New York City plays a major role. In fact New york is the second largest film hub in America. Being one of the important commercial centers of America, New York sees a variety of trade activities going on in and around.

Some of the important destinations in the city are: Ellis Island, Empire State productions, Washington Square Park, Times Square, Central park, New York Botanical Gardens, Bronx Zoo and The RockeFeller Center. Memorable Events in New York City like the Tribeca Film Festival and The Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village are sure to be a treat to tourist visitors.
