Ok. It took you long enough but you decided to go for it and start your own business. That's great. But what do you do next?
In the old days you could choose to cold call or go door to door trying to sell your product or service. You could choose to hire advertising experts to create a flashy but expensive advertising campaign. Maybe you were one of those who used the postal service to mail offers and flyers about your company to the general public.
You'll be glad to know that none of the above is necessary today. Why not? We now have the internet. Since the advent of the internet a small business owner can compete with much larger competitors in terms of utilizing some smart internet marketing methods. In doing so you save money on your advertising budget while putting profits from sales into your pocket faster.
It is very important to create your own website. On the bright side you can now create a really good website without having to mortgage your house. A lot of savvy business people are deciding to join a business which already has its own website. A note of caution here. If you join a business which already has its own website, I would strongly urge you to also create your own website or, at the very minimum, your own lead capture page. This enables you to assimilate all of the contact info from the visitors to your site. Why this is important will be illuminated below.
There is a vast array of advertising methods available online. A number of these are absolutely free. Utilizing some free ad campaigns is strongly recommended in the early days of your business. Find a site which allows you to submit free ads for your business and make sure to include a link to your lead capture page or your own website. Another tried and true method is using banner ads. These are much larger and in general I prefer not to use this method because many people ignore them. However, there are successful people out there who use them frequently.
A great way to attract more traffic to you site is to give away something for free. I'm not talking about a toaster here. Writing a free e-newsletter which provides unique and interesting advice to the reader works like a charm in getting more visitors to your site. A better example may be giving away free e-books. The advantage here is you only have to write it once. Be sure to include a link to your website or lead captue page.
One of the greatest hidden gems in internet marketing is the use of affiliate marketing. What the heck is affiliate marketing? Once you have your website or lead capture page, you can sign up as an affiliate on other people's sites to refer their product or service to the visitors on your site in exchange for a referral commission. Simply create a link to those other sites on your lead capture page, after you have signed up in the other site's affiliate program of course. Remember there are a number of visitors who come to your site. Some will become your customers and some won't. But you can use affiliate marketing to all those visitors to your site because you have captured their contact information. For those that didn't buy your product at least you are making money from them. And for those that did buy your product, you're simply making more money from them.
