Many people have the dream of becoming a published author. While some people specialize in a certain type of writing, many dream of what they consider the ultimate prize, the time to write a book. Many, many people you know may have started to write a book, but the unfinished story is sitting in a desk drawer, forgotten. This is a shame, but it is a common story. It takes a lot of dedication to write a book, and some people simply don't find the time to fit it into their life.

For those who do, there is much more to it than just writing the book. Once you have a finished product, you have to edit until your eyes fall out. Many writers may write a book, but the editing becomes too much for them, and they don't have the energy to do the many rewrites they need to do to get a better product. Some hire professional editors, but for many struggling writers, this is just not an option.

Before embarking on the journey to becoming a writer, consider the work involved. Unless you are extremely dedicated to putting out a well written and polished product it is likely you will not succeed. Make sure that you have what it takes to follow the project through from start to finish.

Perhaps you have already finished your big novel - good job! Now you need to get someone to read it and agree to publish it. Many writers will tell you that this is much harder than the writing itself. To have the best chance of being published you need to get your book to as many publishers as you can. Don't be put off by rejections, just keep trying.

In the event that there are no intelligent publishers out there to print your book, you can consider self-publishing. This involves taking care of, and paying for printing, marketing and distributing the book. Again this is going to take more work on your part as well as a lot of your money. The bonus is that no one else gets a cut when your book starts flying off the shelves.
