Read about nearly any historical figure and you will find references to their journals and letters. Journaling was undertaken by the vast majority of people in the past. Even with modern computers today, journaling is still highly advizable.
With the rapid advances of computers and the web, we often forget that computers only became wide spread a few decades ago. Before that, people actually wrote everything down and journaling was a key part of that.
The most notably of journals comes from a little girl during the second world war. I am, of course, talking about Anne Frank. A teenager, she kept a journal of the harrowing experiences she and her jewish family experienced hiding from the Nazis.
The journaling of Anne Frank is something else. To read of the observations and thoughts of this teenage girl is to get chills. Hiding from 1942 through 1944 in Amsterdam, the account is mesmerizing, but probably not to her as it represents her daily thoughts.
Obviously, I hope your life is not as extreme as Anne Frank's! That being said, the process of journaling or keeping a diary is something you should strongly consider doing if you are not already. It has many benefits and no real downside I can think of.
How sharp is your memory? Do you really remember the details of your life three, five or 10 years ago? Probably not. Journaling gives you an opportunity to create a timeline of your life that can take you back to events long lost in your memory.
Given the pace of modern life, we often can get caught up in the moment. Losing the forest for the trees is an apt cliche. A journal can help you gain some perspective. Writing out your thoughts gives you the chance to really think.
On the same note, a journal is also a great measuring stick for the importance of things. This is particularly true in bad times. When things go bad, it can be all doom and gloom. Reading through your past journal entries can give you some perspective and lighten the mood.
Every wondered about the history of your family? Well, some families actually keep journals that are handed down from generation to generation. This is purely optional, but it creates a family history everyone can read and enjoy.
